Centers and Facilities
Flagship Unit: Center for Solar-Terrestrial Research (CSTR)
The Center for Solar-Terrestrial Research in the College of Science and Liberal Arts (CSLA) will be the flagship unit for this umbrella Institute. CSTR is uniquely suited for studies that follow solar activities from the solar surface to Earth's atmosphere. In addition to expertise in using NASA data extensively, major and unique NJIT instruments and facilities taking data that are essential to study the key science questions in space weather include:
- Big Bear Solar Observatory
The 1.6 m Goode Solar Telescope (GST, the largest presently operational solar telescope) at Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) provides the highest resolution observations of the solar chromosphere and photosphere.
- Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array
The newly commissioned Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA) is a unique, solar-dedicated radio instrument to study both the thermal and high-energy components of solar flares and measure the structure and magnetic fields in the corona.
- Space Weather Research Laboratory
The SWRL's mission is to understand the magnetic activities of the Sun and their effects on the near-Earth environment. Many tools are being developed to monitor, understand and forecast solar activity and its geomagnetic effects.
Center for Computational Heliophysics (CCH)
The newer Center for Computational Heliophysics develops data analysis and modeling tools in the area of heliophysics by combining the expertise of the Ying Wu College of Computing (Computer Science Department) and College of Science and Liberal Arts (Departments of Physics and Mathematical Sciences) and establishes partnership with the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) Division at the NASA Ames Research Center.
Center for Big Data (CBD)
The Center for Big Data's mission is to synergize the strong expertise in various disciplines across the NJIT campus and build a unified platform that embodies a rich set of big data enabling technologies and services with optimized performance to facilitate research collaboration and scientific discovery.
Center for AI Research
The Center for AI Research aims to provide an intellectual environment and primary home for AI research initiatives at NJIT. It aims to promote cutting-edge and high-quality research activities and to cultivate faculty and student publications and patents in AI and machine learning. It will foster collaborations and interactions between professors in fundamental AI research and professors who leverage AI methods to solve domain problems and to develop synergies among research groups across different departments and colleges. It plans to train postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students in fundamental AI research as well as applied AI and prepare them to be a skilled and capable workforce in both academia and industry.
Center for Applied Mathematics and Statistics (CAMS)
The CAMS brings researchers from academia, industry, and government to NJIT by organizing interdisciplinary workshops and by bringing together researchers with common goals whose strengths are complementary. CAMS activities also include support for the submission of research proposals, which is done through dissemination of information, organization of group projects, collegial advice and assistance with application documents.
